PROTOCOL FOR ACCOMMODATIONS IN READING (PAR)
Before you start:
- Follow link to download PAR from the Don Johnston website and save all files on flashdrive.
- Make a binder-You can either print every page in download or take a shortcut and print pages 18-27 from manual and put in binder (these are the key directions for administering and scoring)
- Print and complete following pages for each student/administration (these can all be found in folder labeled Data Forms):
- PAR Background Data Form
(at minimum, you must know student's reading grade level equivalency
before you start)
- Likert scale-you will
use this at end of each step and record response on scoring sheet

- For Step 1-Student reads
passage:
- Based on student's
reading level, print the appropriate reading passage and correlating scoring
form, which has the questions you will need to ask after the student reads the
passage (these are located in folder labeled Grade level passages and
forms)
- Make sure you have a
timer to determine words per minute
- Based on student's
reading level, print the appropriate reading passage and correlating scoring

- For Step 2-Teacher reads
passage:
- Based on grade level,
print the appropriate reading passage and correlating scoring form.
- The manual suggests you
take into consideration interest, but also try to select the same type of
passage for each step (expository or narrative)
- Based on grade level,
print the appropriate reading passage and correlating scoring form.
- For Step 3-Student
reads/listens to passage using reader (these are directions specifically for
Read OutLoud):
- Based on grade level,
select passage in Word format then Save As "Rich Text Format" (drop
down below where you name document when saving) on the desktop you
will be using during administration
- At time of
administration, open Read OutLoud and select "add etext" button on
top bar and navigate to passage and have it ready to go before you start Step 1
- Bring headphones, if
appropriate
- Make sure to print off
correlating scoring form for passage
- If the student has never
used Read Outloud or another reader before, you will need to give them some
directions and practice. If you are in elementary school and don't have access to Read Outloud, you can download FreeNaturalReader for assessment.
- Based on grade level,
select passage in Word format then Save As "Rich Text Format" (drop
down below where you name document when saving) on the desktop you
will be using during administration
